MERLOTIs a free and open online community of resources designed primarily for faculty, staff and students of higher education from around the world to share their learning materials and pedagogy. MERLOT is a leading edge, user-centered, collection of peer reviewed higher education, online learning materials, catalogued by registered members and a set of faculty development support services.

PBS LearningMedia: Powered by PBS and their vast collection of learning objects. The good news is that they have a vast array of various types of DLOs, the bad news is you have to register and use their content in a web page housed on their site. Still, a great place to access media from TV shows such as Nova and American Experience.

Audio

Great sources for royalty free sounds and sound effects you can use in your own DLOs.

Lit2Go: is a free online collection of stories and poems in Mp3 (audiobook) format.
Royalty Free Music: Jingles and background music for presentations and video expressly for educators.

Online Multimedia Creation

Prezi Prezi is a cloud-based presentation software tool for sharing ideas on a virtual canvas. Prezi is distinguished by its Zooming User Interface that allows uses to zoom in and out of the presentation.
Xtranormal Xtranormal allows you to produce do-it-yourself animations and turns your words into an animated movie.

Here are a collection of videos and step-sheets that cover some of the district supported applications covered in the workshop. These will help you as you create your DLOs.

Video

  • KeepVid - Extracting or Downloading Video out of YouTube
  • Screen Casting - Using QuickTime to record your screen
  • Trimming a movie - Using QuickTime to trim either the beginning or end of a video

PDFs

The Power of Preview - Preview can be used to annotate PDFs or JPGs. You can add text boxes, shapes, lines, and highlight. It can also be used to change the size of JPGs to make them more web friendly.

Audio

Creating Audio Files using GarageBand - GarageBand is a great application to use to create audio files.

Presentations

Export Keynote to QuickTime - You can export your Keynote presentation in a number of different formats including QuickTime which turns your presentation into a movie that can be loaded into a web page, etc.

Builds and Animations in Keynote - Use Keynote to create animated slides or stand alone animations.
Adding a Voice Recording or Audio Files to Keynote - Keynote provides a way to add a voice narration to the slideshow. Audio files created in GarageBand or QuickTime can also be added to Keynote slides.
